Why is Rub ‘n Restore® Color developing hairline cracks in the finish?

Hairline cracks in the finish are a sure sign that Rub ‘n Restore® Color was applied in thicker coats with insufficient dry time in between each. This issue often occurs with lighter colors which contain white, the heaviest pigment with the poorest coverage. A cool (less than 65º F or 19º C) or humid environment may lend to the problem.

The Solution:

  1. Reactivate the color using a damp sponge and water. Wipe the surface just as you normally would, polishing the cracks and thinning the color.
  2. Allow to thoroughly dry.
  3. Repeat this process until the surface looks and feels natural.
  4. If necessary, follow with another thin coat Rub ‘n Restore® Color to correct any imperfections.
  5. Allow to dry.
  6. Repeat as necessary.

Usually this remedies the problem. If you feel that you need a more aggressive approach, you can perform this process using a green scouring pad with water or cleaner. This will strip out a lot of the color, allowing you to start again. Remember to apply Rub ‘n Restore® in thin layers and thoroughly dry each one before applying another.

      • It does! Just got my order in and started on a sectional that had been sitting outside with vines growing on it. I thought it needed a miracle to even begin to help but it actually is working amazingly!

  1. I love my new Ivory leather sofa. Yes, the Ivory covered my original color of medium yellow. After one year, I did have some small crack lines that I will go over following the above instructions. I live in a very dry environment which I believe caused the thin crack lines. I also purchased the Satin Sealer to hopefully prevent future hairline cracks.
